The victory has brought Walker’s early story back into focus. Before becoming a Cardinals first-round pick, he was already a standout at Decatur High School, where Gilbert coached him. The report says Walker finished the Derby final with six consecutive home runs, offering a national stage for the power that had long been familiar in his hometown.
Gilbert’s memory of Walker is not limited to the distance of his best hits. It is also about how quickly he learned from failure.
At a 2020 event at LakePoint Sports, Walker missed a fastball early in an at-bat. When the pitcher tried a similar delivery higher in the zone, Walker adjusted decisively.
“E você fica ali pensando: 'Tudo bem, isso é diferente'. Nem todo garoto tem essa capacidade. Você pode enganá-lo uma vez, mas ele vai fazer o ajuste e vai fazer você pagar”, Gilbert said.
That ability to respond appears to have been central to Walker’s development. His final high-school season was shortened by COVID-19, but he had reportedly done enough to earn selection by St. Louis and begin the climb toward the major leagues.
Gilbert also sees a player whose personality has helped him handle growing attention. “Eu digo às pessoas o tempo todo: ele só quer ser um dos caras”, he said, portraying Walker as a supportive teammate rather than a star consumed by his own profile.
The next challenge is converting Derby momentum into sustained production for the Cardinals. The spotlight has intensified, but Walker’s most important adjustment may be the same one Gilbert identified years ago: stay calm, learn quickly and make the next opportunity count.
