Arsenal Secure Place in Proposed Women's Club World Cup

Arsenal through, Chelsea facing a twist

Arsenal qualify as winners of the 2025 Women’s Champions League, giving England one confirmed representative. Chelsea are currently third in UEFA’s coefficient rankings, ahead of Bayern Munich, and are expected to take another European place.

That outcome changes if Manchester City win this season’s Champions League. intends to limit each nation to two entrants, meaning City would join Arsenal and Chelsea would lose their expected place despite their strong coefficient position.

UEFA is set to receive six places in the 16-team tournament:

  • Five clubs are expected to qualify automatically.
  • A six-team qualifying event would provide the remaining places.
  • The three highest-ranked teams from that event would complete the line-up.

Barcelona are also expected to qualify automatically after winning the previous two Champions League titles. Bayern and Wolfsburg are next in the current rankings, although Wolfsburg’s absence from this season’s competition could alter the order.

A January problem for the WSL

The proposed timing creates the sharper issue for English football. The WSL winter break is scheduled from 21 December to 10 January, meaning the Club World Cup would overlap directly with the domestic season.

Participating clubs could be unavailable for up to four league matchweeks. Moving the winter break would not solve the problem easily, with postponed fixtures competing for space before the Champions League knockout stage begins in February.

Later-stage participants could also miss the FA Cup fourth round, adding another major fixture clash.

The next key step is ’s final qualification and scheduling decision. Until those plans are ratified, Chelsea’s status and the WSL’s reshaped calendar will remain two of the tournament’s biggest unresolved storylines.
