Victory’s path has been more demanding than their two clean sheets might suggest. They needed penalties to overcome Western Sydney Wanderers in the last 16 before defeating APIA Leichhardt and Sydney FC without conceding.
New head coach Giovanni Savarese has plenty of experience to call upon, with Denis Genreau joined by arrivals including Philipp Ziereis, Tom Lockyer and Guillermo May. Victory’s challenge will be to impose their tempo without allowing the occasion to become a burden.
South Melbourne’s route has been the great romantic story of the tournament. The Victorian NPL club eliminated Adelaide United, Fremantle City, Preston Lions and Queensland Lions, with their quarter-final against Preston drawing 6,673 spectators.
That run has revived memories of South’s four National Soccer League titles and the club’s enduring importance to Melbourne’s Greek-Australian football community.
For Victory captain Jason Davidson, the final is personal. His father, Alan, spent his formative years at South Melbourne before building a career in Europe and representing Australia.
“We all know the history of him at South Melbourne and what that means to him and to the Davidson family,” Davidson said. “So he's super excited, as am I.”
There is another familiar link. Victory forward Harry Sawyer spent three years at South and lives close to Janković, with their pre-match exchanges even extending to a supermarket meeting.
South also have players accustomed to the professional game, including Sebastian Pasquali and Paulo Retre. Striker Bul Juach, meanwhile, arrives after a prolific Victorian NPL season and a semi-final hat-trick.
The final will test whether South’s local-ground toughness can survive a major-stadium atmosphere. As Janković put it, “going away to Preston, going away to Heidelberg, places like these where the fence is one metre from the sideline and you're getting yelled at by 10,000 people, that's also not easy.”
The next storyline is whether that experience can unsettle Victory-or inspire South Melbourne to complete one of Australian football’s finest cup upsets.
