Why Robert Lewandowski Chose Chicago Fire Over Europe

Why Chicago, not another European club?

The Poland striker says conversations with head coach Gregg Berhalter, alongside a visit to the city, helped shape his decision. Rather than wait for another offer from a familiar European destination, Lewandowski reportedly decided that his next challenge had to be elsewhere.

“I just looked outside Europe,” he added.

That clarity could matter for Chicago. Lewandowski arrives with the reputation of a decisive centre-forward and the expectation that his experience will raise standards around the squad. He also made his ambitions clear, saying he wants “to help my team-mates and new club take the next step” and “to win some titles.”

A new MLS stage

Lewandowski is expected to make his MLS debut against Inter Miami CF, giving the move an immediate spotlight. The fixture would place one of football’s most recognisable strikers in a new tactical and cultural setting, with Chicago hoping his movement, finishing and leadership can quickly translate.

The challenge will be more than scoring goals. Lewandowski must build an understanding with new teammates, adapt to Berhalter’s demands and handle the intensity surrounding a high-profile arrival.

His Barcelona bond with Yamal

Lewandowski also reflected on Spain’s World Cup triumph and the influence of his former Barcelona teammates. His comments on Lamine Yamal were particularly supportive, with the winger having returned from a reported injury layoff before the tournament.

“He's still young, he came to the World Cup after injury and he didn't play for like eight weeks,” Lewandowski said. “But he showed really good quality.”

The immediate storyline is now clear: Lewandowski’s reported Chicago debut, likely against Inter Miami, will reveal whether his European pedigree can become a defining force in MLS.
