Philadelphia Union Reassess Sporting Strategy and Squad

A sporting reset under pressure

The Union entered the break in poor form, with only one win beforehand and turmoil away from the pitch. The coaching staff had lost influence in the dressing room, while the previous sporting director underwent league-mandated sensitivity training after misconduct allegations were confirmed.

Now, new sporting director Jon Scheer is intensifying market discussions, with more prominent targets reportedly under consideration. At the same time, McDermott says clubs have made enquiries about Union players.

“qualquer decisão passa pelo impacto esportivo imediato,” McDermott said, making clear that departures will not be approved simply to generate revenue.

Academy success, first-team tension

Philadelphia’s identity remains tied to player development. McDermott says the club invests $10 million annually in its academy structure, including the YSC Academy, coaching staff and WSFS SportsPlex.

That model has produced valuable talent, but it has also strengthened the perception that the Union are a selling club. Cavan Sullivan is reportedly expected to move to Manchester City when he turns 18, following the paths of Brendan Aaronson, Mark McKenzie and Matt Freese.

The tension is financial as much as sporting. McDermott acknowledges that the senior-team payroll is among MLS’s lowest, a point that continues to frustrate supporters.

Building beyond Chester

The ownership group is also considering the club’s long-term footprint. The Union maintain strong ties with Chester and Delaware County, but are reportedly studying whether a future presence in central Philadelphia could expand their audience.

That ambition extends to fan development. Amanda Young Curtis said, “fãs que vão a três jogos têm mais chance de se tornar sócios de temporada,” highlighting the club’s focus on turning occasional visitors into regular supporters.

The next stretch of MLS matches, followed by the transfer window, will test whether Philadelphia’s revival is temporary or the first step in a deeper sporting and commercial transformation.
