Chelsea Beat Western Sydney 6-4 in Chaotic Alonso Debut

A winning start with a defensive warning

Chelsea’s youthful starting XI contained only Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap and Dario Essugo among the senior first-team players. That inexperience was exposed repeatedly, with the hosts scoring through Anthony Pantzopoulos, Aydan Hammond, Dylan Scicluna and Awan Lual.

The goals came from different problems rather than one isolated lapse. Hammond was allowed to beat Josh Acheampong too easily, Adarabioyo lost possession before another opening, and a loose pass from Estevao allowed Western Sydney to break for their fourth goal. The patchy surface did not help Chelsea’s build-up, but Alonso will demand sharper decisions regardless of the conditions.

Joao Pedro changes the game

Chelsea’s attacking quality improved when Alonso introduced Cole Palmer, Estevao, Joao Pedro, Levi Colwill and Marco Palestra. Jamie Gittens made an instant impact, forcing a save before scoring from Joao Pedro’s cross.

Then Joao Pedro took over. The Brazil forward scored Chelsea’s equaliser, put them ahead and completed his hat-trick from close range after a goalmouth scramble. His late intervention turned a damaging result into a memorable comeback and showed the value of Chelsea’s stronger options from the bench.

Alonso’s next test

The positive is clear: Chelsea moved the ball fluently for long periods and produced six goals despite falling behind three times. The concern is equally obvious: four conceded goals against opposition able to attack the space behind a young back line.

Chelsea face Tottenham in Sydney on Saturday, giving Alonso an immediate opportunity to improve defensive organisation while preserving the attacking freedom that made his first match so entertaining.
