The names linked with United range from Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga to Carlos Baleba, Manu Koné and Alex Scott. Former United coach Rene Meulensteen has also backed Youri Tielemans as a potential fit, pointing to the Aston Villa midfielder’s experience and Premier League knowledge.
Koné’s situation could intersect with Marcus Rashford’s uncertain future. Reports suggest Roma may consider Rashford in a possible deal for the French midfielder, though his salary is said to be a significant obstacle. Meulensteen’s view, as reported, is that manager Michael Carrick recognises Rashford’s ability, but any return would require clarity over his role and commitment. For now, neither a transfer nor a reunion is settled.
The review may not stop in midfield. Lewis Hall has been linked with United as Luke Shaw approaches the final year of his contract, although the pursuit is described as difficult. Meulensteen has also urged the club to consider Micky van de Ven, while acknowledging that clearing space among the centre-backs would come first.
At the other end of the age spectrum, JJ Gabriel remains a name to watch. Reports say the 15-year-old has attracted Barcelona’s interest, though he is not yet able to sign a professional deal. Goalkeeping plans are also unclear: Orlando Gill has been linked with United, while reports say the club is not actively seeking another goalkeeper after bringing in Karl Darlow. Altay Bayindir has meanwhile been associated with a possible exit.
The next transfer window will show whether Ugarte’s absence turns a longstanding midfield concern into United’s clear priority. Until then, the links remain possibilities, not outcomes.
