SoFi Stadium: From NFL Home to Olympic Swimming Venue

A venue built for more than football

In Inglewood, SoFi is home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, but its design reaches beyond the NFL. A sweeping roof and enormous central video display give the venue the feel of an indoor arena while keeping it open to the surrounding California air.

That flexibility is central to its appeal. The report presents the stadium as a World Cup venue as well as a home for American football, placing it among the major stages in Los Angeles’ sporting calendar. Its scale and infrastructure are intended to accommodate events with very different demands.

From the World Cup to Olympic swimming

The next transformation is expected for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, when the stadium is due to host swimming after featuring in the opening ceremony, the report says. Converting a football venue for pool events would be an unusual undertaking-and a striking way to bring a traditionally indoor sport before a much larger crowd.

McIntosh’s comment points to what organisers hope to create: an atmosphere that makes the venue itself part of the event. The report also relays Swimming Canada performance director John Atkinson’s view that staging swimming there could offer spectators and athletes a new experience.

For the Rams and Chargers, SoFi remains a regular home; for the city, it is also a platform for one-off occasions. The next test will be whether its Olympic conversion can match the spectacle of its football and World Cup events-and make the stadium feel just as compelling with a swimming pool at its centre.
