Messi reportedly came off the bench in the 70th minute of Argentina’s 3-0 friendly win over Iceland and scored a penalty shortly afterwards. The 38-year-old had not played since 24 May because of a thigh and hamstring issue, making his return significant but not conclusive.
Argentina open their title defence against Algeria on Tuesday in Kansas City. Cristian Romero and Nico Paz have also reportedly returned from injury as substitutes, while Nahuel Molina did not feature in either warm-up match. Argentina’s immediate priority is to have their key players available beyond the first fixture.
Spain could have Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Victor Munoz available for Monday’s opener against Cape Verde, although the report says all three may face restricted minutes after missing the friendly against Peru.
Yamal’s absence since 22 April makes his recovery particularly important. Spain have also lost Fermin Lopez to a foot fracture, while Mikel Merino is reportedly fit again after a stress fracture.
Neymar is not expected to feature for Brazil against Morocco on Saturday, despite reportedly positive scan results. Wesley, Rodrygo, Estevao and Eder Militao add to Brazil’s injury concerns, though Raphinha has returned and started the team’s last two friendlies.
The United States are without Patrick Agyemang and Johnny Cardoso, while Chris Richards has resumed full training. Canada captain Alphonso Davies is expected to attend the tournament but may miss Thursday’s opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The opening matches will provide the first real test of these recovery plans, beginning with Mexico versus South Africa on Thursday in Mexico City.
