Brady O'Connor Named President of New Jersey MLS NEXT Pro

O’Connor’s first challenge

The report says O’Connor will oversee ticket sales, marketing, partnerships and community relations - responsibilities that make his appointment about far more than administration.

A new professional club must build habits before it builds rivalries. That means creating a matchday audience, connecting with local youth football and convincing families that the team belongs in the community. O’Connor’s previous involvement with the New York and New Jersey 2026 World Cup host committee gives him relevant experience, although the scale and rhythm of running a club will be a different test.

The immediate task is turning a planned venue into a football destination.

A club replacing a familiar pathway

The proposed team would take the professional place currently held by New York City FC II in Middlesex County. That gives the project an existing football context, but it also raises expectations.

MLS NEXT Pro is built around developing players who can progress towards first-team football. For New Jersey, the opportunity is to create a pathway linking grassroots participation, academy football and the professional game. The report also says youth fields at the wider NEXUS development and a planned New York City FC programme could strengthen that ecosystem.

The permanent name will matter, but the football pathway will matter more.

Public support is part of the project

The report says the wider $350 million sports and entertainment complex has faced criticism from state lawmakers over public funding and COVID-related relief. That debate will follow the club into its launch.

For O’Connor, community engagement cannot be limited to branding exercises. Supporters will want clarity on what the club delivers locally, from access to football facilities to jobs, events and meaningful player development.

The next storyline is whether the planned fan meeting in Metuchen and the naming campaign can turn curiosity into commitment. By the time July 2027 arrives, the club will need more than a stadium - it will need an identity.
