Rio Ferdinand Tips RB Leipzig Winger Yan Diomande for Liverpool

Why Diomande has attracted attention

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable first campaign in Germany, recording 12 goals and nine assists in 33 Bundesliga appearances. He has also played Champions League football before turning 20 and is expected to be a key figure for Ivory Coast at the World Cup.

Ferdinand has named Diomande as his choice for the tournament’s best young player, a strong endorsement before the winger has even begun his international campaign. His rise has been rapid, moving from Spanish second-tier football with Leganes to the Bundesliga spotlight.

Liverpool face a major battle

Liverpool have been linked with a move for the left winger, but Leipzig appear to hold the stronger negotiating position. The German club are reportedly seeking £112.4 million, despite valuing Diomande at around £80 million, while Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United are also said to be interested.

Diomande’s contract runs until 2030, giving Leipzig little reason to accept a reduced fee. For Liverpool, the appeal is clear: a young wide attacker with pace, directness and significant room to develop.

Diomande is in no rush

Despite the growing speculation, Diomande has indicated that he wants to progress carefully. Reflecting on Leipzig’s decision to sign him, he thanked the club for taking a chance when “nobody knew me”, as he put it.

That stance could complicate any immediate move. His World Cup campaign, beginning with Ivory Coast’s meeting with Ecuador before games against Germany and Curaçao, will provide another major stage.

Liverpool’s interest may intensify if Diomande shines in the tournament, but the next move will likely depend on whether the winger pushes for Anfield - and whether Liverpool are prepared to meet Leipzig’s demanding price.
