Our Lady of Lourdes Faces Negligent-Supervision Lawsuit

What the lawsuit alleges

According to the filing described in the report, the student, identified as L.O., was allegedly grabbed by a teammate and thrown onto a concrete area. The family claims he suffered injuries to his arm, back and hip.

The lawsuit also alleges that the coach was not present during the altercation. It says that, after questioning the team, the coach did not speak to L.O. separately or assess whether he needed medical attention.

Those claims remain disputed legal allegations rather than established facts.

A wider dispute over supervision

The complaint reportedly says the coach focused on a remark made by L.O., interpreting it as a racial insult. The teenager was allegedly told to turn his shirt inside out and remained on the bench for the rest of the warm-up and match.

The family further claims that hostility followed the coach’s departure, affecting L.O. and his parents. It says they did not seek the coach’s dismissal and that the decision was made by the school and/or archdiocese.

Lau said she hopes the school can work with the family to restore a positive environment and protect students in the future. That places the case within a broader question facing school sport: how should coaches respond when physical safety, discipline and accusations of offensive language collide?

The next stage will be the defendants’ response and the court’s handling of the allegations. For the school community, the most important storyline may extend beyond the lawsuit: whether clearer supervision and safeguarding measures emerge before the next season begins.
