Ex-England captain Wayne Rooney may have a little explaining to do after being charged with drink driving. He was pulled over while taking a 29-year-old brunette home from a wild night out.

According to Mail Online, Rooney was driving the woman’s Volkswagen Beetle when he was stopped by police just a few miles from his £6million Cheshire mansion at 2 o’clock in the morning.

The Everton and former Manchester United legend’s pregnant wife, Colleen, was on holiday in Majorca at the time.

Rooney, 31, had earlier been seen dancing on the tables and singing Oasis songs during a drinking session with friends, including another former United player, Wes Brown.

The woman Rooney was reportedly with was an office worker from Salford, Greater Manchester. They were driving home at just after 2am. She was said to be too drunk to drive herself.

According to Metro, Rooney was three times over the legal driving limit. He spent nearly 12 hours in the cells before being collected by agent Paul Stretford.

Rooney and his pals went first to the Italian restaurant, Piccolino, in Alderley Edge at around 4pm and then moved onto the upscale Bubble Room bar until 10pm.

Local group Funky Treacle were playing Oasis covers and Rooney was seen singing along with their rendition of Wonderwall.

The group moved on to a club in nearby Wilmslow, where they stayed until the early hours.

On the way home from jail, Rooney was seen looking stone-faced on his mobile phone.

No prizes for guessing who he was calling…
