Every footballer has a price and Liverpool have put a number on the head of want-away star Philippe Coutinho – £140 million!
Football.com has learned that the club’s American owners, Fenway Sports Group, did name a figure in negotiations with Barcelona.
According to the Daily Record, Liverpool told Barca during their negotiations last week that they expect no less than £140m for a deal to be considered.
The La Liga giants topped out their bid at £90m and FSG then issued a statement Coutinho wasn’t going anywhere.
But with the striker putting in a transfer request, which was immediately rejected by Liverpool – Barca are said to be plotting a new bid at the increased asking price.
They believe skills like this will fit the bill at the Nou Camp.
The Spanish side needs a top level replacement for Neymar and they have the spare cash to buy just about anyone they want, whatever Jurgen Klopp says.
If the move goes ahead, it will be a disaster for the club’s plans to progress this season.
Coutinho, a modest, quiet man with a genuine feeling for Anfield, knows this may be a one-off opportunity to play alongside his friend and former Liverpool favorite Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. He doesn’t want to let it pass by without a fight.
