Montella Targets Nations League Quarter-Finals With Turkey

A demanding step up

Turkey’s promotion places them among Europe’s top Nations League sides, with France, Italy and Belgium providing a formidable Group A1 challenge. The report says Montella views the target as ambitious but consistent with the country’s wider football development.

Turkey’s progress under Montella has already included a run to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals and promotion from League B. The next test is whether that momentum can survive against opposition with greater depth, experience and tournament pedigree.

Montella reportedly believes improvements in infrastructure and investment from Turkish clubs have created a stronger platform. That progress, however, will be judged against results when the pressure rises.

Why the federation stayed the course

Turkey’s early World Cup exit placed Montella’s position under serious consideration, according to the update. He did not seek to excuse the campaign, arguing that his players competed well but failed to take important chances in the opening matches.

Instead, the Turkish Football Federation reportedly chose to assess his wider record rather than make a decision based solely on the tournament. Montella explained: “When I arrived, we couldn't qualify for the Euros, and we won the group. They didn't judge me on those two matches, but on all my work.”

That backing gives him authority, but it also raises expectations. A coach retained for the long term must show that a disappointing tournament was a setback rather than the beginning of a decline.

The next measure of progress

Montella has reportedly expressed a desire to remain in charge through Euro 2032. Reaching the Nations League quarter-finals would strengthen that long-term case, while a difficult group-stage campaign could reopen familiar questions.

The first League A fixtures will reveal whether Turkey are ready to compete at the highest tier or still learning how to belong there.
