Gotham FC Sets NWSL Attendance Record at Citi Field

A landmark night for Gotham

The crowd surpassed the previous mark set by Coco Gauff at the 2023 US Open, underlining the scale of the occasion. Gotham said 70% of ticket buyers had never attended one of its matches before.

Supporters travelled from Long Island, Connecticut, Westchester and Queens, while queues for Gotham merchandise reportedly stretched for an hour. The club’s branding replaced the usual Mets imagery around the stadium, creating a clear sense that this was Gotham’s night.

Kerr brings another layer

Sam Kerr made her Gotham debut after joining from Chelsea, adding global star power to an already high-profile fixture. Trinity Rodman featured for Washington, but the Spirit left Queens beaten.

The challenge now is to make Gotham more than an occasional destination. The club has a committed following in Harrison, New Jersey, yet has struggled to attract supporters from across the wider New York area on a regular basis.

Turning a spectacle into a habit

That is the commercial and cultural test. Tisch Blodgett has described investing in the club as “a big financial bet” and “a big life bet”, and a crowd of this size offers proof that the ceiling in New York is high.

But one-off events do not automatically create weekly support. Gotham must now build repeatable reasons to attend: stronger local outreach, compelling matchday experiences and a clearer identity for fans beyond the existing base.

The scheduled move to Etihad Stadium in Queens for the 2028 season gives the club a long runway. The next storyline is whether Gotham can turn this record-setting celebration into the foundation of a regular New York football crowd.
