The 25-year-old winger is reportedly hoping Gent will exercise its option to sign him permanently from Celtic after his return to form in Belgium.
Balikwisha scored his first Gent goal in the win over Zulte Waregem, ending a difficult scoring drought and giving fresh momentum to a move that had appeared uncertain. The report says it was his first goal in 14 months.
His Celtic spell produced 13 appearances without a goal, and he subsequently fell out of favour after Martin O’Neill took charge. Regular football now appears to be the priority, ahead of financial considerations or reputation.
Balikwisha is already looking beyond a permanent move. He believes Gent could develop him, restore his market value and eventually sell him for between £15m and £20m.
“If Gent exercise the option, they can immediately resell me for £15-20m. Everyone would be happy,” he said.
That ambition reflects the modern loan market, where a struggling player can become an asset again with consistent minutes and a clear role. Gent, meanwhile, would need to decide whether his recent improvement represents a lasting revival rather than a brief upturn.
The report says Balikwisha also felt his Celtic experience was affected by the intensity of Scottish football, while a rejected proposed MLS loan further convinced him that his opportunities were limited. He has also described the move to Glasgow as difficult for his family.
Balikwisha’s immediate challenge is simple: keep playing, keep contributing and convince Gent that the option is worth activating. His relationship with manager Rik De Mil, who he credits with helping him regain confidence, could be central.
The next transfer window will reveal whether Gent sees a long-term project-or whether Balikwisha’s Belgian resurgence becomes the platform for another move.
