Thompson’s final college season reportedly ended amid an ankle problem, a positional change, the death of her grandfather and a serious knee injury. The account says she spent the closing stretch watching from the sideline as Montana continued without her.
“In the moment, it was the largest heartbreak I've ever felt in my life,” Thompson said.
That pain came after a standout junior campaign that had appeared to point towards a different ending. She had earned major conference recognition and helped Montana deliver important wins, raising the possibility that a professional football future might follow.
Instead, the pressure of continuing became part of the decision to step away.
Thompson is reportedly now working as a financial adviser for Edward Jones, a role that offers a different kind of responsibility but still demands preparation, patience and trust.
“I poured literally everything I had into it,” Thompson explained. “And it got to a point where it was just too much.”
Her finance background gives the next chapter a clear direction. The move is not simply about replacing football with another job; it is about finding a career that can stand on its own, rather than serving as a continuation of her playing résumé.
Thompson has not completely severed ties with soccer. She is also reportedly coaching youth players with Missoula Surf Soccer Club, allowing her to pass on lessons from a career that included pressure, setbacks and significant achievement.
That connection may prove important as she settles into life after competition. The next storyline to watch is whether coaching becomes a lasting part of her new identity, alongside her work in finance. Thompson’s career is changing direction, but the game still has a place in what comes next.
