Jaissle’s teams have generally been associated with front-foot football, quick regains and vertical attacks. If this was the first public look at that approach on Tyneside, the early signs sound encouraging.
That matters. A managerial change always brings uncertainty, and supporters usually want two things straight away: intensity and clarity. Even in pre-season, those are the first markers.
Yoane Wissa’s reported double is the other obvious headline. Newcastle have sometimes looked at their best when their attack is fast, aggressive and willing to run beyond defenders, and Wissa appears to fit that profile.
If Jaissle wants a more dynamic forward line, Wissa may become a central figure rather than just another option.
The main talking point, though, was Anthony Elanga being stretchered off after a challenge that reportedly led to a red card for Jose Gaya. The update says the injury is not thought to be serious, and that will be the biggest relief inside Newcastle.
Pre-season optimism can disappear quickly when a key wide player goes down. For now, the focus will shift to how Elanga recovers, whether Wissa can build on this start, and what Jaissle’s side looks like in its next test before the new campaign gathers pace.
