Newcastle made the sharper start and were ahead after 4'14'' when Elanga finished from William Osula's assist. They carried a 1-0 score into the break, with the first half also bringing yellow cards for Yoane Wissa, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Miley. It was an edgy spell, but the early breakthrough kept the home side in control.
Liverpool hit back at 54'06'' when Gakpo converted from Gravenberch's pass. Newcastle responded straight away with a double substitution, sending on Jacob Ramsey and Willock on 55 minutes, and Willock restored the lead at 56'03'' from Wissa's assist.
Liverpool then turned to the bench again, introducing Victor Munoz, Alexis Mac Allister and Ronald Araujo as they pushed for a second equaliser. Newcastle's Jacob Ramsey and Jacob Murphy were later booked, as were Virgil Van Dijk and Lukas Hornicek in a tense finish, before Szoboszlai converted the decisive late penalty. The result leaves both teams with one point from their opening league match.
