Rocky Mountain women preview delayed opener at Hastings

A fast start, even with a delay

The timing change matters because openers are usually about routine. Rocky now has to manage travel, hydration and game rhythm before facing a side that appears to have already found competitive sharpness.

  • Reports suggest Hastings opened with a 2-0 away win over Dakota State
  • The same update says the Broncos then lost 3-0 at home to Benedictine of Kansas
  • Hastings also appear to be coming off a 16-4-3 season and a run to the NAIA National Tournament

That gives Rocky a difficult first assignment: a team with recent tournament pedigree and at least some match fitness already in the legs.

Rocky’s returning core offers continuity

If there is reassurance for the Battlin’ Bears, it is in the base they bring back. The report says interim head coach Kevin Luse starts his first season in charge after 17 years with the programme, with six returning starters and 15 players who featured last autumn.

Rocky’s recent numbers give them a platform.

  • 12 wins in 17 matches last season
  • 48 goals scored
  • 17.1 shots per game
  • 8 clean sheets
  • 2 wins from 3 non-conference matches

Add the return of all-conference players Charlize Davis, Matea Vernon and Grace Curnow, and Rocky should travel believing it can carry threat and control into tough venues.

No easing-in against Morningside

There is no soft landing after Hastings. Rocky then heads to Morningside for a Monday match in Sioux City, and that looks like another stern test. Reports suggest Morningside reached the national tournament last season and, despite losing key seniors, still retain an experienced spine.

That makes this opening road trip more than a start; it is an early measuring stick. If Rocky can leave Nebraska and Iowa with its structure intact and its attack flowing, the tone for the rest of the season could change quickly.
