And yet the omission still comes with a reminder of what Palmer can be. He scored in the Euro 2024 final, even in defeat, and his displays at the Club World Cup - including a standout final for Chelsea - underlined his high-end match-winning quality.

That is why this feels less like a rejection than a snapshot. The next story is simple: if Palmer stays fit, finds rhythm and locks down a clearer role at club level, the argument for bringing him back will quickly become loud again.
