Marc Overmars Steps Down From Royal Antwerp Role

A career built on speed and ambition

Overmars first made his name with Ajax, where his acceleration, direct running and ability to attack from wide areas quickly marked him out as one of the Netherlands’ most exciting players.

That reputation carried him to Arsenal, before a move to Barcelona placed him among the game’s biggest names. He also represented the Netherlands, combining sharp movement with a willingness to take on defenders. Injuries interrupted parts of his playing career, but his status as one of Dutch football’s standout wide players was firmly established.

From the pitch to the boardroom

Overmars later returned to Ajax in an executive role, spending almost a decade as the club’s director of football. His work there helped shape recruitment and sporting strategy before he resigned after being found to have sent inappropriate messages to female colleagues. He apologised for his behaviour.

He joined Antwerp in 2022, bringing experience from both Dutch football’s leading institutions and the highest level of the European game. But a mild stroke in December that year left lasting concerns about the demands of professional life.

“You all know that my health has not been optimal,” Overmars said, adding: “My energy is now completely depleted.”

A major decision for Antwerp

Antwerp must now replace the figure responsible for its sporting direction. The next appointment will inherit a role that requires recruitment expertise, long-term planning and close coordination with the coaching staff.

Overmars said he would make a “drastic decision” by stopping professional activities completely for the time being. The immediate storyline is therefore twofold: how Antwerp rebuilds its leadership structure, and whether Overmars can prioritise his recovery away from football’s relentless pressure.
