A move to Munich would offer Stones the chance to compete at the highest level again, but it would also place fresh scrutiny on a defender whose final years at City were disrupted by injuries. His experience, versatility and comfort in possession remain valuable qualities, particularly for a side expected to control games and defend from the halfway line.
Bayern appear to be one of the clearest options mentioned so far, although no agreement has been reported.
A return to Everton would carry a different kind of appeal. Stones left the club for City a decade ago, and a homecoming at Goodison Park would give him the opportunity to become an experienced leader in a familiar environment.
David Moyes’ side reportedly enjoyed a solid campaign before fading late and finishing in mid-table. Stones could bring authority and composure to the back line, provided he can maintain his fitness.
