Trusty, the youngest of six siblings, grew up in a family where sport was taken seriously. He identified his sister Onnie as a particularly important influence after watching her progress through the United States youth setup.
Her experience helped him see a possible path in soccer. Later, watching the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and hearing the national anthem reinforced that ambition.
Trusty said his career decisions were consistently made with the goal of representing the national team and reaching a World Cup. That journey has now brought him to one of the biggest stages in the sport.
His time at Celtic has also played a major role in his development. Trusty described the Scottish club’s demands, where pressure to win is constant, alongside the value of Champions League experience.
He believes playing outside the United States has strengthened him physically and mentally. That experience, he suggested, has also helped several American players grow as they prepare for a tournament expected to draw new attention to the sport.
Trusty has described the current national team as one of the most talented the country has assembled, though expectations will rise sharply once the competition begins.
The defender also lamented the reported absence of teammate Cameron Carter-Vickers, who has been affected by injury. Trusty highlighted their understanding in defence, with Carter-Vickers operating on the left and him on the right.
