Popovic was already understood to be under contract until after the World Cup, but the reported extension takes his tenure into the next major tournament. The announcement came less than 48 hours before Australia’s opening match against Turkey, making the timing particularly notable.
The decision appears to reflect Football Australia’s preference for stability rather than waiting to assess Popovic’s future after the tournament. The coach took charge in October 2024 and has reportedly guided Australia through qualifying unbeaten, securing automatic World Cup qualification.
Football Australia chief executive Martin Kugeler described the agreement as “a fantastic outcome” and said it allows the governing body “to plan with absolute confidence” after the World Cup. Kugeler added that “stability and continuity are vital, especially with our exciting, developing young Socceroos squad”.
The Asian Cup follows quickly after the World Cup, running from 7 January to 5 February. Keeping the same coach and staff could allow Australia to carry tactical work, squad knowledge and momentum directly into the tournament rather than beginning another transition.
Popovic has also spoken about developing younger players for the Asian Cup and the wider cycle. That makes the reported extension more than a short-term reward: it offers a clearer pathway for the next generation of Socceroos.
There is still an element of surprise. A strong World Cup could have increased Popovic’s opportunities elsewhere, but both coach and federation appear to have chosen continuity.
Popovic has made clear that the immediate priority remains the World Cup, saying, “My absolute focus right now is on the World Cup.” If the reported agreement proceeds as described, Australia will then turn quickly towards Saudi Arabia and the challenge of matching the country’s 2015 Asian Cup triumph.
