Australia Expected to Keep Winning Lineup Against USA

Beach gets another chance

Beach’s reported selection ahead of the more experienced Matthew Ryan was one of the major talking points before the tournament. The report says the goalkeeper made eight saves against Turkey, giving Popovic a strong performance to consider when choosing his starter.

Retaining Beach would reward that display while avoiding an unnecessary change after a winning opening match. For Australia, stability in goal could be particularly valuable against a United States side expected to apply pressure at home.

Popovic backs the structure

The report also expects Australia to preserve its three-man defence, with Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar and Cameron Burgess operating behind wing-backs Jacob Italiano and Jordan Bos.

That shape offers Australia width without sacrificing an extra central defender. Aiden O’Neill and Paul Okon-Engstler are expected to continue in midfield, although Jackson Irvine reportedly remains an alternative from the bench.

The attacking roles are likely to stay unchanged too. Irankunda and Metcalfe, credited with the goals against Turkey, should play behind Toure. Keeping those combinations intact would allow Australia to build on the understanding that helped them start the campaign positively.

The test against the United States

The main challenge will be maintaining balance. Australia’s wing-backs must support the attack without leaving space for the United States to exploit, while Toure will need to occupy the central defenders and create room for the two supporting attackers.

If the reported lineup is confirmed, Popovic will be trusting the players who produced the opening result rather than rotating after one match. The next test, reportedly scheduled for Friday in Seattle, will show whether that continuity can move Australia closer to the knockout stage.
