City have used Matheus Nunes at right-back, despite his natural position being central midfield. That solution offers flexibility, but Gusto would provide a more conventional option for the role.
At 21, Gusto also fits the profile of a player who could develop within a demanding possession-based team. His reported eight goal contributions last season underline the attacking potential that could appeal to City, particularly from a full-back position.
Gusto is reportedly contracted to Chelsea until 2030, giving his club substantial leverage in any negotiation. Chelsea are not believed to be under pressure to sell, so City would likely need to meet a significant valuation for the deal to progress.
The report places that figure at around $75 million (£57m). That would represent a major commitment for a player whose starting role at Chelsea may depend partly on the fitness of Reece James.
When James is available, he is expected to remain Chelsea’s first-choice right-back. That creates a difficult calculation for Gusto: stay and compete for a place at a club with a long-term contract, or seek the regular football that could accelerate his development.
The reported interest also carries a managerial link. Enzo Maresca has previously worked with Gusto at Chelsea, and his expected move to City could strengthen the player’s appeal if the manager believes he can develop him in a defined role.
AC Milan are also reportedly exploring Gusto’s situation, giving the defender another possible route.
The next storyline will come when the summer transfer window opens. City must decide whether Gusto’s upside justifies the fee, while Chelsea will control the negotiation unless the player’s search for regular football becomes decisive.
