Chelsea Prioritise Crystal Palace Defender Maxence Lacroix

Lacroix fits Alonso’s structure

A report says Chelsea are prioritising Lacroix because Alonso is expected to favour a 3-4-2-1 system. That shape demands centre-backs who can defend wide spaces, cover behind aggressive wing-backs and remain comfortable when building from the back.

Lacroix’s recent Premier League experience strengthens the case. The report says he joined Palace for £15m and became an important part of a side that won three trophies. His reported place in France’s World Cup squad is another signal of his rising standing, putting him ahead of several highly rated defensive alternatives.

Transfermarkt reportedly values Lacroix at around £40m, although there is no agreed figure between the clubs. Palace’s position could therefore determine whether Chelsea move quickly or turn to another option.

Ramon offers a younger alternative

If a Lacroix deal does not materialise, Jacobo Ramon is reportedly the fallback choice. The young Spanish centre-back, now at Como, would represent a different type of investment: less Premier League experience, but significant room for development.

That alternative could also reshape Trevoh Chalobah’s future. Como are reported to have made an offer for the England defender, while Inter Milan are monitoring his situation. A move to Italy could create a pathway for Ramon to head in the opposite direction.

Chelsea’s defensive reset

The reported changes extend beyond central defence. Malo Gusto is expected to leave, with Marco Palestra linked as a replacement, while Marc Cucurella’s departure has added to the wider reshaping.

The next transfer-window decision will reveal whether Alonso gets his preferred defensive leader or has to build the back three around a younger, less proven alternative.
