Semra Hunter: From Real Madrid TV to World Cup Coverage

From sporting setback to broadcasting

Hunter originally hoped to become a professional footballer, but a serious injury at 16 ended that ambition. Sport remained central to her life: she later became a junior Olympic volleyball champion before turning towards journalism and communications.

Her academic route added another layer to her profile. After completing a degree in peace and conflict studies, she studied communication and sports journalism at the Real Madrid International School. That combination of sporting experience and formal media training would become central to her broadcasting career.

The Real Madrid launchpad

Hunter joined Real Madrid TV in 2013, spending two and a half years at the club. The role gave her direct exposure to Spanish football and helped establish her reputation as a specialist on La Liga.

Her language skills have also widened her reach. Hunter speaks English, Spanish, Turkish and Catalan, allowing her to work comfortably across different football cultures and international assignments.

Since leaving Madrid, she has worked across major broadcasters and media organisations, building a portfolio that extends beyond matchday analysis. Her ability to explain Spanish football to a broad audience has become one of her defining strengths.

From La Liga to the World Cup

Hunter’s relationship with ITV began in 2022, when the broadcaster secured rights to show 10 La Liga matches per season. That platform helped make her a familiar voice to viewers before the World Cup brought a much larger audience.

She has also hosted UEFA’s preliminary draw for the 2026 World Cup, adding international-event experience to her résumé. Alongside Laura Woods and Mark Pougatch, she now occupies a prominent role in ITV’s tournament coverage.

The next test will be sustaining that authority throughout the World Cup. For Hunter, the biggest stage represents not a sudden breakthrough, but the latest step in a carefully built Spanish-football career.
