Sand Artist Matt Long Creates Sculpture for Staten Island

A rare commission at home

The local connection is the story. The report says Long, who is based on Staten Island, has received only his second paid commission in 26 years in his own community. That makes the sculpture more than event decoration: it is a homecoming for an artist whose work is usually created far from his base.

The installation is expected to reproduce a sculpture Long completed at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, the previous week. Its arrival at a Staten Island stadium gives the piece a second life, this time in front of the audience closest to the artist personally.

A global career in a local frame

Long’s professional routine has reportedly taken him around the world, where he creates large sandcastles, abstract sculptures and commercial installations. His portfolio has included work connected with Disney, Nike, Nickelodeon, McDonald’s, the U.S. Navy and football-related events.

That international background sharpens the contrast with this project. Long is described as a world-recognised sand sculptor, architectural wood restorer, television personality and original cast member of *Sand Masters*. Yet the immediate appeal of this commission is simple: it allows him to work at home and finish the day there.

For a World Cup watch party, the sculpture can serve as both backdrop and conversation starter. It links a global tournament with the people, venue and artist of one community.

The next storyline comes when the event opens and fans encounter the finished work in person. For Long, the significance may last beyond the tournament: his most personal commission could also become one of his most memorable.
