Celtic Await Tjark Ernst Decision on Goalkeeper Future

Ernst at the centre of the market

The report says Ernst returned to Hertha’s pre-season work as interest intensified, placing the goalkeeper at the centre of a decision that could shape several clubs’ summer plans.

Celtic appear to view the 22-year-old as a priority for the position, but the competition may complicate negotiations. A transfer is reportedly valued at around £4 million, although no move has been confirmed.

Hertha sporting director Peter Gorlich reportedly said the club had received so many calls about Ernst that he had lost count. His message, however, was that the goalkeeper remains under contract and must decide where his future lies.

Why the decision matters

Goalkeeper recruitment rarely allows much margin for error. The position demands reliability, communication and the confidence to handle pressure immediately, particularly at a club expected to compete domestically and push for progress in Europe.

For Celtic, Ernst would represent a move for a young goalkeeper with room to develop rather than simply a short-term solution. For Hertha, keeping him would protect an important part of their squad while avoiding the disruption of rebuilding behind the defence.

The report says coach Stefan Leitl wants to retain as many players as possible and accepts that offers are arriving for Ernst. Hertha are therefore planning for both outcomes: a renewal of the goalkeeper’s commitment or a summer departure.

Maeda’s separate storyline

Maeda’s World Cup comments offer a different Celtic talking point. After Japan’s elimination by Brazil, the forward reportedly said he would return home with his head held high, while thanking supporters and acknowledging the quality of the opposition.

That response, alongside Postecoglou’s praise, reinforces Maeda’s value beyond goals. His relentless work without the ball remains a defining part of his game.

The next step is Ernst’s decision. Until he commits, Celtic’s goalkeeper plans will remain in motion-and the market may decide how quickly the club must act.
