Newcastle United Set for Four World Cup Players' Return

A staggered return

The report says Woltemade and Thiaw are expected back on Tuesday, 21 July, followed by Elanga on Wednesday, 22 July, and Wissa on Thursday, 24 July.

That sequence could give Howe a timely boost before the first public pre-season fixture against Gateshead on Saturday, 26 July. Their involvement is possible rather than guaranteed, with the Newcastle manager likely to judge each player’s physical and emotional condition individually.

Woltemade, in particular, may need careful handling after Germany’s penalty-shootout elimination, while Elanga and Wissa also leave the tournament after significant involvement for their countries.

Newcastle’s carefully managed summer

Newcastle’s main squad is due back in training on Monday, 13 July, a week later than a normal pre-season schedule because of the World Cup. Howe has already stressed that players involved in the tournament would receive appropriate recovery time.

The club is also expected to spend around 10 days training in La Manga, a shorter journey designed to control fatigue while giving the squad a focused preparation block. Other scheduled fixtures include Bristol City, Valencia and Everton, alongside further matches at St James’ Park.

Two key players remain away

The return of four players will help, but Newcastle’s group will still be incomplete. Bruno Guimaraes has advanced with Brazil, while Dan Burn remains involved with England and has yet to appear at the tournament.

That creates a moving target for Howe, who must balance integration, recovery and tactical work before the Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday, 23 August. The next major storyline will be whether the returning quartet can feature against Gateshead or must wait until the later pre-season schedule.
