MARTA Plans Seventh StationSoccer Field at Hamilton E. Holmes

A legacy project with a clear purpose

The report says the Hamilton E. Holmes site is the only StationSoccer field designated as an Atlanta World Cup legacy project. That gives it a different role from the network’s existing pitches: not simply a recreational facility, but a visible link between the tournament and the city’s grassroots infrastructure.

Its location matters. A football pitch beside a rail station can lower one of the biggest barriers to participation - access. Players and families do not need to rely solely on private transport, while the facility remains connected to neighbourhoods well beyond the stadium district.

From six fields to a wider network

The planned venue would join StationSoccer fields at six other MARTA stations:

  • East Lake, East Point and Five Points
  • Lindbergh, Kensington and West End

The report says all seven sites form part of the League of Stations, creating a connected football footprint across Atlanta’s transit system. That structure could help turn isolated pitches into a recognisable community network, with more opportunities for informal play, coaching and local competition.

The update also says the project could support development at three additional stations that authorities want to bring into the League of Stations. If that expansion takes place, the World Cup’s influence would be measured less by the tournament’s short-term crowds than by the number of communities gaining regular access to football.

Hamilton E. Holmes will therefore be an important test. Its opening should show whether a major event can leave behind facilities that remain useful when the lights, visitors and fixtures have gone. The next storyline is whether the seventh pitch becomes the starting point for MARTA’s next phase of football growth.
