Switzerland Recall Xhaka and Embolo for Nations League

Xhaka and Embolo restore experience

The reported return of Granit Xhaka gives Switzerland an experienced organiser in midfield. The update says the Sunderland player has accumulated a national-record 152 appearances, underlining his importance to Yakin’s structure.

Breel Embolo is also included after a reported move to Atlanta United. His presence offers Switzerland a proven attacking outlet, particularly during a demanding run of Nations League fixtures.

The value of both players will extend beyond their positions. With younger selections entering the group, Xhaka and Embolo can provide leadership in matches where Switzerland are expected to control possession but must break down compact defences.

Boteli offers fresh attacking momentum

The report says Winsley Boteli has earned recognition after a strong start for Sion, with 12 goals in 14 games and a hat-trick against Ajax in Conference League qualifying. That form has reportedly attracted interest from Galatasaray and Porto.

Those claims remain to be confirmed, but the selection itself points to Switzerland rewarding current club form. Boteli’s direct running and finishing could give Yakin a different option from his more established forwards.

Parma defender Sascha Britschgi is also reportedly receiving his first senior call-up, while Zachary Athekame returns to the group without having made his international debut.

A demanding opening

The report says Switzerland begin away to North Macedonia on 26 September, before travelling to Scotland on 29 September. They are then expected to host Slovenia and North Macedonia in Lucerne.

The opening trip will be the first test of Yakin’s balance between continuity and experimentation. Boteli and Britschgi may need patience, but Xhaka and Embolo give the squad a stable platform.

The North Macedonia fixture will establish whether Switzerland’s returning leaders can accelerate the integration of their new generation.
