Mexico City Boosts Security for England vs Mexico

Angel of Independence becomes controlled zone

The Angel of Independence, traditionally a focal point for football celebrations, will face strict access limits, the report says.

  • 25,000 people will be allowed into the main area.
  • Overflow supporters will be redirected along Paseo de la Reforma.
  • Large screens will show the match elsewhere.
  • England fans have been advised to avoid the monument entirely.

The restrictions reflect the difficulty of managing a crowd that could quickly exceed the available space. Limiting access may reduce pressure at the city’s most recognisable gathering point, but it will also push supporters into several separate areas requiring coordinated policing.

Police presence doubled after tragedy

The report says more than one million people celebrated Mexico’s victory over Ecuador last week before a disturbance led to the deaths. Security at the Angel of Independence and the official fan festival has since been doubled.

A further 6,000 police officers are expected to patrol Paseo de la Reforma, twice the number deployed on 30 June. The planned operation is also described as nearly four times larger than the Metropolitan Police deployment around the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

Authorities are additionally alert to the possibility of protests by a political group opposed to England’s participation in the tournament. That concern adds a political dimension to an already challenging matchday operation.

Kick-off remains unchanged

reportedly considered moving the match six hours earlier, initially because of climate concerns. The proposal was dropped after England and Mexico argued that they would not have enough preparation time.

The next test will come when supporters begin moving through the city on Monday morning. Controlled access, the six-thousand-strong police reinforcement and the dispersal of fans will determine whether the match passes peacefully-or whether security remains the defining story.
