Egypt Coach Hossam Hassan Appeals for Palestinian Support

A call for football to speak

Hassan described the suffering of Palestinians as “uma vergonha para nós” and “uma vergonha para o mundo inteiro”, directing criticism at decision-makers who, he said, had left human beings behind.

The Egypt coach also challenged football’s governing bodies, players and media to take a more active position. His central message was clear: “Minha mensagem seria usar o futebol como poder brando”, Hassan declared.

He then appealed for a collective response from the global game, saying: “Peço a todos vocês, à mídia, a todos os atletas do mundo, independentemente de suas identidades, que talvez possamos transmitir uma mensagem coletiva.”

A flag after Egypt’s breakthrough

The timing gave the statement additional weight. Egypt had reached the last 16 after eliminating Australia in a penalty shootout, and Hassan appeared with a Palestinian flag after the qualification.

That gesture connected Egypt’s sporting progress with the political message he delivered in Atlanta. The coach’s final appeal was deliberately direct: “Deixem o povo palestino ser, deixem existir, deixem viver uma vida própria. Isso é normal.”

For Hassan, football’s influence extends beyond results, and he wants the World Cup stage to reflect that belief.

Argentina brings the sporting test

The immediate challenge, however, is formidable. Egypt’s next opponent is Argentina, the reigning world champion, in a match that will test whether Hassan’s team can maintain its focus against elite opposition.

The result will shape Egypt’s tournament story, while Hassan’s intervention is already set to remain one of its most significant moments. The next fixture will show whether the team can turn its emotional momentum into another landmark performance.
