Tesfaldet Tekie Included in Eritrea's Reshaped Squad

A diaspora-led reset

The reported selection reflects a major change in Eritrea’s approach. The reshaped squad is understood to contain 27 players from 13 countries, with 14 receiving their first international call-ups.

Only three players are reportedly based in Eritrea. That balance points to a deliberate effort to draw on the global Eritrean community, particularly after the report linked the restructuring to the defection of seven players following the team’s preliminary-round victory over Eswatini.

  • 27-player squad reportedly assembled for the two fixtures
  • Players selected from clubs across 13 countries
  • 14 first call-ups underline the scale of the rebuild

Tekie adds experience

Tekie was reportedly called up in March but did not travel for the Eswatini tie. His inclusion now would give Eritrea a midfielder with experience of a high-level club environment and previous exposure to international football.

The move also highlights the importance of dual-national players to Eritrea’s football project. The team’s return to competitive action has been built around players who can connect the national side with football communities outside the country.

A difficult group-stage test

Eritrea reportedly reached the group phase with a 4-1 aggregate win over Eswatini, ending a six-year absence from international competition. The next challenge is considerably tougher, with Kenya offering a demanding opening away from home.

The report says Eritrea are expected to face Kenya in Nairobi on Saturday before meeting South Africa on 30 September. That home fixture is reportedly set to take place in Cairo because Eritrea lacks a suitable venue.

The first two matches will show whether Eritrea’s diaspora-led reset can turn a surprise return into a sustainable qualifying campaign.
