Dayna Spiring Appointed President of Winnipeg's New Club

A stadium at the heart of the plan

The report says the club is developing a 4,500-seat soccer-specific stadium at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex on Waverley Street. For Spiring, that venue is more than construction: it is intended to make the team financially viable and bring supporters close to the action.

That would mark a clear change from Winnipeg’s previous professional football experience. The former Valour FC played at the much larger home of the Blue Bombers, a setting that offered scale but lacked the intimacy of a dedicated football ground.

“Vamos ter de mobilizar de verdade esta comunidade em torno do time”, Spiring said. The challenge is now to turn that ambition into season-ticket demand, local partnerships and a recognisable identity before the first ball is kicked.

Experience beyond the touchline

Spiring arrives with a background in strategy, legal work, economic development and board leadership. The update says she previously became the first woman to chair the Winnipeg Football Club, giving her an understanding of both sport administration and Winnipeg’s wider business community.

The club was reportedly co-founded by former Canada international Desiree Scott and former Valour coach and general manager Rob Gale. That combination points to a project seeking both executive credibility and football expertise as it builds its foundations.

On the pitch, the team is expected to offer a high-level women’s product, with ambitions that could include players pushing for Canada’s Olympic squad. Those plans remain to be tested, but the platform is taking shape.

The next major storyline will be the club’s name announcement, expected in the coming weeks. From there, attention will turn to stadium progress, recruitment and whether Winnipeg can build the community momentum Spiring says the project demands.
