Messi Cup Expands to 16 Under-16 Clubs in South Florida

A global field takes shape

The tournament will run from 25 October to 1 November, with matches staged at Inter Miami’s stadium. The expanded line-up brings together academy teams from Europe, South America and the United States, giving the competition a distinctly international character.

Among the invited clubs are Barcelona, Ajax, Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, Benfica, Palmeiras, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea. Inter Miami will also take part, while Newell’s Old Boys add a personal connection for Messi, who began his career at the Argentine club.

The presence of Barcelona, where Messi spent most of his playing career, adds another layer of interest. For young players, facing opponents shaped by different football cultures can be as valuable as the matches themselves.

More than a youth tournament

Messi’s comments underline the organisers’ wider ambition. The event is designed not simply as a series of academy fixtures, but as an introduction to the demands and opportunities that come with international football.

Tim Pastore, chief executive of 525 Rosario, has described the increase in participation as an important step towards establishing the tournament as a permanent fixture on the global youth calendar. That will depend on the quality of the competition, the experience for players and whether leading clubs continue to view the event as worthwhile.

The field also includes Flamengo, Boca Juniors, River Plate, Independiente del Valle and UE Cornellà, ensuring a broad mix of playing styles and football traditions.

The next test

The second edition should reveal whether the Messi Cup can move beyond its star-powered identity and build lasting credibility. With the first tournament featuring only eight teams, expanding to 16 is a clear statement of intent.

The next storyline will be whether this South Florida showcase can become a regular destination for the world’s best young academies.
