The immediate issue is Ederson’s contract, which reportedly runs until the end of the season. That leaves Atalanta with a narrow window to protect his value. A renewal would keep an important midfielder in Bergamo and remove the risk of losing leverage as the agreement approaches its expiry.
The report says director of sport Cristiano Giuntoli was surprised by the change in circumstances and that Ederson is willing to remain. However, talks over a new deal are not the same as a completed renewal. Until the player signs, the pressure behind the original sale remains.
Ederson joined Atalanta in 2022 from Salernitana for a reported €22.9m, after arriving at Salernitana from Corinthians only six months earlier. If the reported €45m United package is accurate, it would have represented a significant return, but also reflected the limited time left on his contract.
That market signal matters. Atalanta must now decide whether a new agreement can match Ederson’s sporting importance while preserving a future sale opportunity. Delaying the decision could weaken the club’s negotiating position again.
For Atalanta, keeping Ederson is not automatically a setback. A failed late move gives the club continuity in midfield and time to plan properly. But the retention plan needs a clear deadline, because the contract situation that created the original transfer opportunity has not disappeared.
The next storyline will be whether Ederson’s reported willingness to stay becomes a signed extension before the next transfer window opens.
