Minnechaug Defeats Unbeaten Pope Francis 1-0

Sacco delivers the response

The report says Sacco settled the contest in the 61st minute, collecting a pass from Ainsley Holden on the left before beating her marker and finishing. It was reportedly Sacco’s fifth goal of the season.

“Tentei passar pela defensora e, sinceramente, peguei um pouco embaixo na bola. Mas não importa como você chuta, desde que entre”, Sacco said, describing a finish that did not need to be perfect to change the match.

Minnechaug’s biggest improvement appears to have come from its intensity without the ball. After Pope Francis began strongly, the home side reportedly pushed its defensive line higher and made it difficult for the visitors to build momentum.

A defensive victory

The account credits Minnechaug with limiting Pope Francis to nine shots, while goalkeeper Isabel Horne is reported to have made two important saves. Hannah Johnson also reportedly kept Minnechaug ahead with several interventions at the other end.

Pope Francis’ clearest second-half opening came around the 50th minute, when Rylan Waskiewicz broke free but sent her effort over the goal. Soon afterward, Minnechaug advanced its lines and found the breakthrough.

“It was a great game, one of those high-school games with swings and intensity,” coach Nundi Goncalves said. “The Pope Francis is very good, well coached and organized. I’m very happy for my players, because they work hard.”

The next test

The reported victory leaves Minnechaug at 8-1-1 and restores belief after the earlier loss. Pope Francis, now reportedly 10-1, will have to respond quickly after suffering its first setback.

Minnechaug’s next reported fixture is at home against Wachusett on Saturday, while Pope Francis is expected to travel to New Jersey to face Ramsey High School and Immaculate Heart Academy.
