The report says Roma have offered £39m for Summerville, while West Ham are understood to value the Netherlands international at £50m. No agreement has been confirmed, but the Italian club is reportedly moving closer to the Hammers’ valuation.
Summerville has also reportedly given the green light to a move to Serie A, adding pressure to United’s pursuit. Manchester United have identified him as a target as Michael Carrick looks to improve the balance of his attack, particularly on the left wing.
Aston Villa could further complicate the picture. They are reportedly considering Summerville as a replacement if Morgan Rogers completes his expected move to Chelsea. The report says Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement for Rogers, although that transfer has not been described as completed.
What would Summerville offer United? A direct wide option capable of stretching defences and providing greater variety in one-versus-one situations. That would fit a squad preparing, according to Wilcox, to compete across four competitions.
United’s summer planning has reportedly focused heavily on midfield after Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s long-term injury. Adding another attacker remains important, however, particularly if Carrick wants more flexibility in the final third.
Wilcox said Carrick had “thoroughly earned” the chance to continue as head coach, while also describing the aim of building “a talented and determined group of players ready to compete across all four competitions.” Summerville would represent an attacking addition aligned with that ambition.
The immediate question is whether United are prepared to match Roma’s reported offer or meet West Ham’s higher valuation. Roma appear to have the advantage, especially if Summerville’s preference is accurate.
Villa’s interest may become serious only if Rogers leaves, but that possibility could create another obstacle. Until negotiations progress further, Summerville remains a West Ham player and the transfer is still unconfirmed.
