The report says Dallaglio’s medal came from England’s 20-17 victory over Australia in Sydney on 22 November 2003. Jonny Wilkinson’s drop goal in extra time secured England’s first men’s World Cup title.
Made from silver gilt, the medal was sold with its original case and green-and-blue ribbon. Its reverse reportedly lists the Australian cities that hosted matches during the tournament, adding provenance beyond Dallaglio’s name.
The former England captain’s 12-item collection reportedly generated £130,650, including the buyer’s commission.
Some other trophies and medals did not reach their minimum prices. The contrast highlights how major final victories and distinctive items can command more attention than broader career memorabilia.
The auction also featured items associated with Eric Cantona and Harry Kane, alongside several Manchester United and Arsenal pieces.
A Cristiano Ronaldo-associated United shirt from 2008-09 sold for £6,000, while a signed Arsenal shirt associated with Ray Parlour reached £4,000. An Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shirt from 1999-2000 went for £2,200.
The Dallaglio sale leaves a clear next storyline: whether future rugby auctions can match the premium attached to medals from historic finals, or whether football’s global stars will continue to dominate cross-sport demand.
