Berhalter has built a strong profile in North America since making his MLS debut with Columbus Crew before joining Vancouver in 2022. The report credits him with 20 goals and 26 assists in 167 appearances, while he was also named in the MLS Team of the Season last term.
That production would offer Middlesbrough another midfield option with the ability to influence matches in the final third. For a team targeting promotion, adding a player with an established record of creating and finishing chances could strengthen the squad’s attacking depth.
The proposed move also has a personal link. Berhalter and Aidan Morris came through Columbus at a similar time, remain close friends and have represented the United States together, the report says.
Morris has already joined Middlesbrough, alongside Adilson Malanda, as part of the club’s increasing focus on recruitment from the United States and MLS. That familiarity could help Berhalter settle quickly if the move is completed, particularly as Middlesbrough reshape their squad after missing out on the Premier League.
The club has also added Will Lankshear and reportedly retains interest in Columbus winger Max Arfsten, pointing to a wider recruitment strategy rather than an isolated deal.
The immediate question is whether advanced negotiations become an official Middlesbrough signing. Until that happens, Berhalter’s move should be treated as a reported agreement rather than a completed transfer.
If confirmed, his first priority will be adapting to English football and proving that his MLS influence can translate into a sustained promotion push on Teesside.
