John Stones Reportedly Close to Inter Milan Move

Arsenal’s defensive calculation

Arsenal’s interest reflected both Stones’ ability and uncertainty around William Saliba. The French defender was forced off during the World Cup semi-final against Spain with a back problem, while he had previously acknowledged playing through pain during the season.

Stones would have offered more than cover. His capacity to step into midfield and build from the back fits the possession demands of Mikel Arteta’s side. The attraction was clear: a defender with international experience, positional flexibility and Premier League knowledge available without a transfer fee.

That profile now appears to be moving beyond Arsenal’s reach.

Chelsea also face a rethink

Chelsea’s interest was reportedly linked to Xabi Alonso’s plans to reshape the squad at Stamford Bridge. The club has been looking for greater depth in central defence, with Maxence Lacroix reportedly close to a £52 million move from Crystal Palace.

Stones’ availability made him a logical alternative, particularly after a final season at Manchester City in which injury restricted him to 15 appearances in all competitions. However, his age and fitness record would have made the decision more complex for a club balancing immediate experience with long-term planning.

Chelsea’s defensive recruitment is already developing in other areas, with Marco Palestra added as a versatile full-back option and Pep Chevarria reportedly under consideration.

Inter move changes the market

For Inter, Stones would bring tactical versatility to a defence that values composure in possession. For Arsenal and Chelsea, his expected arrival in Milan narrows the pool of experienced centre-backs available on favourable terms.

The next step is confirmation. If the agreement is completed this week, both London clubs will need to identify alternatives before the transfer window closes.
