Swansea City Interested in Rangers Defender John Souttar

Experience behind the interest

Souttar offers the profile of an experienced defender rather than a development signing. The 29-year-old has spent the past three years with Rangers and has won 24 Scotland caps, giving him a background that could appeal to Swansea’s recruitment team.

The report says his position became less secure after Rangers extended his contract in February. New manager Derek McInnes is understood to be assessing his defensive options, leaving Souttar’s role unclear heading into the summer.

That uncertainty could make him available, but it does not guarantee a straightforward deal.

A manageable fee, but a difficult decision

Souttar reportedly has 12 months remaining on his current contract, while Rangers hold an option for a further year. That short-term position could give Swansea room to negotiate, although a seven-figure fee is said to be under consideration.

Swansea have already strengthened at centre-back by signing Stephen Welsh from Celtic. A second addition in the same position may therefore depend on whether Souttar is viewed as an upgrade, a senior organiser or an opportunity too good to ignore.

The bigger question may be the player’s preference. The report says Souttar has reservations about dropping into League One, and his next club will need to offer a convincing sporting pathway as well as acceptable terms.

Competition for his signature

Watford and Sheffield United have reportedly shown interest, while Cardiff City have also previously been mentioned as a possible destination. That competition could strengthen Rangers’ negotiating position, particularly if several clubs remain active.

For Swansea, the appeal is clear: an established Scotland international could add depth and leadership. The risk is committing significant resources to a player whose contract situation and level preferences remain unresolved.

The next stage will come during the summer window, when Swansea must decide whether Souttar’s experience justifies reshaping a defence that has already been reinforced.
