The account of the club’s history says Team Toyota competed in the Sudbury Regional Competitive Soccer League’s Premier Division from 1986 to 1989. In that brief spell, it credits the team with 11 trophies, including three league titles and four consecutive Sudbury Star Cup wins.
The club also reached the fourth round of the Ontario Cup in 1988. Its former players remember a period that brought international opponents to Sudbury and helped make Team Toyota a standout in local soccer.
Nicolucci also recalled the pride of representing the club: “Foram grandes anos sob a bandeira do Team Toyota, e este grupo guarda muitas boas lembranças daquele tempo.”
The reported return comes through a partnership between the league and Laking Toyota, bringing Team Toyota back into competitive play in a different division. League director and team coach Cody Cacciotti highlighted the connection between generations: some current Over-40 players watched the original side as children, while others later faced its players in the men’s league.
That gives the comeback a community dimension as well as a sporting one. It puts former players back on the field under a familiar name and gives younger members of the local soccer scene a living link to the club’s history.
The name’s connection to the game has also extended into youth soccer. The account says Laking Toyota supported teams in Sudburnia Soccer Club’s youth divisions for years. Sudburnia vice-president Lauren Chenard called that commitment “realmente notável” - genuinely remarkable - and said it helps children develop their skills and find a path in the sport.
The next storyline is whether this Over-40 team can add fresh memories to a legacy already cherished in Sudbury.
