MLS Owners Prepare to Vote on Don Garber's Successor

Two different profiles

The report says MLS club owners are preparing to vote on Garber’s successor, with a two-thirds majority required. The finalists are Larry Berg, a co-owner of Los Angeles FC and an MLS board member, and David Nathanson, a former Fox executive with a stake in the Seattle Sounders.

Berg appears to be the favorite, the report says. His work on the league’s sports and competition committee gives him experience inside MLS governance. Nathanson brings a different résumé: he reportedly took part in Fox’s successful bids for World Cup rights covering 2018, 2022 and 2026.

The choice is about more than credentials. Berg offers a club-owner’s view of league operations; Nathanson’s background points toward the media and commercial side of the game. Either would have to step away from his MLS club stake if selected, according to the report.

A handover built to take time

Garber has led MLS since 1999. The report says he is expected to stay in the role through the 2026 season, with his successor taking over in January 2027. That leaves time for an incoming commissioner to prepare, but also puts the league’s next leader in the shadow of a long-running tenure.

Garber’s other brief reflection on growth was concise: “Isso leva tempo.” His successor will need patience as well as a clear plan for the league’s future.

The next milestone is the owners’ vote. Whoever emerges from it will inherit a growing league and the challenge of carrying its momentum into a new era.
