Chugiak Sweeps Region IV Titles Ahead of Alaska State

Relay strength sets the tone

What stands out most about Chugiak is how many different ways the program appears to be able to score.

  • The report says the Mustangs swept the boys’ and girls’ 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
  • Millen III reportedly added the boys’ 100m title.
  • The boys’ 4x200 team is said to have broken a long-standing Region IV meet record.

That matters at state level. Big meets are often decided by depth, recovery and versatility, and Chugiak seems to have all three. When one school controls the relays, it puts pressure on everyone else before the field events and distance races are even fully settled.

More than a one-athlete team

The Mustangs do not look reliant on one headline name. Benjamin Hiestand reportedly defended his discus title and added the shot put, then summed up his season by saying he has set “a new baseline” before state. That is the kind of quote coaches love at this point of the year: confident, but still chasing more.

Elsewhere, the likely challengers have their own match-winners. Dimond’s Nevaeh Watkins reportedly produced one of the sharpest all-around weekends, while West Anchorage’s Kendall Barnett showed the range to threaten across the middle and longer distances. Eagle River’s Luke Shaw also appears to be arriving in strong form after an impressive distance double.

The state storylines

The state meet now looks set up around one central question: can anyone disrupt Chugiak’s all-event control? Dimond, West Anchorage and Eagle River all have athletes capable of changing the picture, but momentum appears to belong to the Mustangs. The next answer comes at Dimond High on Friday and Saturday, where regional dominance will be tested on the biggest stage available.
